NERVE SUPPLY OF MAJOR SALIVARY GLANDS

a) Parotid: Parasympathetic nerves are secretomotor and reach gland through auriculotemporal nerve. The preganglionic fibres begin in inferior salivatory nucleus and pass to otic ganglion through lesser petrosal nerve. Sympathetic nerves are vasomotor and derived from plexus around ECA. Sensory nerve to gland come from Auriculotemporal nerve

b) Submandibular: Parasympathetic secretomotor fibres begin in superior salivatory nucleus and pass through sensory root of facial nerve geniculate ganglion, chorda tympani, lingual nerve and relay in submandibular ganglion. Post ganglion is fibres soon enter submandibular gland. Sensory fibres are from lingual nerve. Vasomotor sympathetic from plexus on the facial artery.

c) Sublingual: Parasympathetic supply is provided by the chorda tympani nerve (from the facial nerve via the submandibular ganglion) is secretomotor. The path of the nerve is à junction between pons and medulla, through internal acoustic meatus and facial canal to chorda tympani, through middle ear cavity, out petrotympanic fissure to join the lingual nerve, travels with lingual nerve to synapse at the submandibular ganglion, then postganglionic fibers travels to the sublingual gland.
